Species Overview

Rubber Ducky Isopods (Cubaris sp. “Rubber Ducky”) are a highly sought-after tropical isopod known for their adorable yellow “duck bill” face. They are considered a more advanced species because they are slow breeders, sensitive to environmental swings, and require higher humidity than many common isopods.

This species is best suited for dedicated colonies or carefully planned bioactive setups that maintain stable moisture and warmth. They are shy and spend most of their time hiding under leaf litter and cork bark. Rubber Duckies are not aggressive and are safe with reptiles, but due to their higher care requirements, they are not typically recommended as a primary cleanup crew species.

Care Requirements

Rubber Duckies do best with a strong moisture gradient and very stable conditions. About half of the enclosure should remain consistently moist, typically maintained with sphagnum moss, while the other half should stay slightly damp but not wet.

Humidity on the moist side should stay around 70–85%, while the drier side should still remain humid overall. Good ventilation is very important because stagnant, overly wet conditions can quickly lead to colony crashes.

If adding Rubber Duckies to a bioactive enclosure, it is important to provide multiple humid micro-zones. This can be done by placing moss under cork bark, around water dishes, and in shaded areas of the enclosure. These humidity pockets allow the isopods to regulate moisture without being forced to stay in wet substrate.
