Description

⭐ Species Overview

Milkback Isopods (Porcellio laevis) are an excellent isopod species for bioactive enclosures, cleanup crews, and hobbyist collections. This species thrives in all but the driest setups and does well with reptiles or as a stand alone colonies. They are protein hungry and some have said that they may bite soft skinned reptiles such as geckos. We have kept them with several species of geckos including crested geckos over the years without any problems, but I always like to warn people that it could happen. Milkbacks are the same species as Dairy Cows.

⭐ Care Requirements

Milkbacks are going to do best with a moisture gradient. You want about 1/3 of their bin to be moist with moss. The humidity on this size should be 40 to 60%. If you are adding milkbacks to a bioactive enclosure you will want to create a moisture zone. We do this by putting moss around the water dish and tucked into a few spots on the cool side of the enclosure. This method works well for semi-arid enclosures as well as more tropical ones.

Recommended diet: You want the enclosure to contain a number of items that are good for isopods to eat. This should be the main diet of your isopods. This includes leaf litter, moss, wood rot, seed pods, and bark. These things should be mixed into the substrate. You can supplementally feed commercial isopod foods, fish foods, and veggie scraps. If you are trying to optimize how quickly they breed it is recommended to feed small amounts twice a week.
